AYAYA (Announcement)

SR0064: AYAYA

Tell us about you...
I'm a DJ from South London. I've loved Pop and R&B since I was a kid - I listened to a lot of Britney & Brandy, and girl groups like Mis-teeq & Danity Kane. My parents played a lot of old school Afrobeat, Fuji music and Reggae at home. I've gone through a lot of different music phases, and I've been influenced by artists like Mariah Carey, Lauryn Hill, Fiona Apple, SBTRKT & Prince.

What got you started as a DJ?
I started DJing at uni in 2013. A lot of people on my course were DJ's, and some of them had only been doing it for like a year. I'd been wanting to DJ for a while, but seeing them made it seem a lot less intimidating to me, so I bought a controller and started teaching myself. I've been DJing on-and-off since then. When I left uni I started a club night with some of my friends, and did that for a few years.

What defines your sound? What inspires you?
Bank Head by Kingdom x Kelela came out around the same time I started DJing, and it's still one of my favourite songs and has had a big influence on the music I play. The songs I grew up on also define my sound I think - like a lot of the stuff I used to watch on MTV Base & also UK Funky & UKG - I like to play songs people know, normally as remixes or edits.

What’s in the mix and why?
This mix is kind of random, there's a lot of the genres I normally play in there, some club music, uk funky, afro house, club classics, a lot of edits. If I vibe with the drums or the vocals, I'll play it.

What music or producers are really exciting you right now?
Some of my fav producers right now are: KG, Helix, Hagan, OSSX, Leonce & Wilfy D. Some of my fav artists right now are: LAYA, Victoria Monet, Chloe x Halle, Bree Runway, Wizkid & Ojerime.

Talk about any club / radio residencies or shows you have?
You can find my mixes on Soundcloud. I also put out a Spotify playlist of the music I've been listening to every month, called AYLIST.

Tell us about the last 12 months / the next 12 month
Last year I started DJing again after a while, so I've just been practising really and building up my music collection. I've done some guest mixes, shout out to Bok Bok, KG, Mo & Elise, Ifeoluwa and DJ Jewli and everyone who's had me on. This year's still looking pretty unpredictable, so we'll see what happens.
